Speaker Profile: Chris Foresman (@foresmac)

Chris is a Senior Systems Engineer at Vokal. He spends most of his days wrangling server-side code in Django and Django Rest Framework, though he has been known to dabble in some highly concurrent Go.

Before joining the Vokal team, he spent five years as an Associate Writer at Ars Technica, contributing daily news reports as well as features on topics like Apple, Inc., digital photography, semiconductors, and patent lawsuits.

A modern-day Renaissance man, Chris has worn many hats, including indie record producer, shoe salesman, graphic designer, photographer, user interface engineer, college instructor, rock journalist, and computer technician. Among his many endeavors, he studied graphic design and computer engineering at Purdue University, and taught graphic design and photography at St. Joseph’s College. In his free time he enjoys watching movies, singing karaoke, eating brunch, and drinking expensive bourbon.

He’ll be co presenting a tutorial with Adam Bain at 1pm Saturday on Building an API with Django and Django REST Framework. This tutorial will walk you through setting up a basic REST-ful API using Django to handle data modeling, ORM, users, and URL routing, and DRF to handle data serialization and deserialization, validation, API-oriented class-based views, token authentication, and permissions. This tutorial presumes some experience using Python and setting up a virtual env, and a basic understanding of HTTP responses/requests. Experience with Django and its ORM will help but it not required.
