Dusty Phillips: Looking for a new role

I haven’t given this blog much — ok, I’ll be honest: ANY — attention lately. I’m hoping that will change in the new year, with a new job that gives me both more time and more ideas for interesting technical articles. What is that new job going to be? You tell me! I’m looking to build your Next Big Thing.

Apparently job searching is no time to be modest, but I still feel like an ass when I say, “I am an exceptional developer who can have instant impact and be a tremendous asset to your organization.” But I am an exceptional developer (and an ass). You can visit my Portfolio or Github profile to get a feel for my abilities, but here are some highlights:

  • Over three years at a major Internet company taught me more than I ever wanted to know about scale, as well as how to work with and lead an engineering team.
  • I’ve authored well-received tech books. I’m really good at explaining things and I love mentoring. I’m pretty good at making the English language behave, too.
  • I am an expert in the Python language. I can make it do anything, from UIs in Kivy to performance optimizations in Cython to web backends in Django or  Asyncio, to your most difficult Python 2 to 3 migrations.
  • I have working knowledge in many other common technologies — too many to list — and will be excited to learn anything you throw at me that I don’t already know.
  • I cofounded the Puget Sound Programming Python meetup group, now three thousand strong after only two and a half years.
  • I’m a decent sort of person that your team will respect and enjoy working with.

By now, I hope you’re super excited to work with me. That way, I can make a few requests (also known as demands) that you will hopefully not find too onerous:

  • I need to be able to work remotely from Canada. This is the only non-negotiable item on the list; everything else is just suggestions.. The good news is that I have extensive experience working remotely. I even completed an entire university degree from home. I’d be a terrific choice even if you don’t normally consider remote candidates.
  • I’m particularly interested in working with one or more of these technologies, although it’s not an exhaustive list:
    • Python 3
    • ECMASCRIPT 2015 (and 2017!)
    • React (and Redux)
    • VR and AR (for “useful” applications, as opposed to entertainment)
    • Internet of Things (in spite of the fact that it is a buzzword, not because of it)
  • I’m particularly interested in finding ways to spread wisdom, or enabling a growth mindset. I hesitate to use the word “education”, and I chose the word “wisdom” over “knowledge” for a reason, but I would still sit up and pay attention if your company’s mission included either of those words.
  • I’d like to free up some time to reactivate this blog, to write a new book that has been struggling to escape my head for over a year, and maybe even to start mentoring again.

In all honesty, though, I often wake up after several hours in the flow state only to discover that whatever I have been absorbed with was not something I thought I would be interested in. So don’t be discouraged if you can’t offer the above, you may be able to entice me with something I don’t know I want to do.

If you think we would get along, get in touch. A good way to contact me is via Facebook Messenger (https://www.facebook.com/dusty.phillips.codes). I’m a bit slower to respond to e-mail (recruiting@phillips.codes will find me), but I’ll try to stay on top of it for the remainder of my job search. Just be aware you’ll be sharing an inbox with movers and realtors and car salesmen and tax attorneys and a host of other people associated with an international transition.
