Come join PYPTUG at out next monthly meeting (June 28th 2016) to learn more about the Python programming language, modules and tools. Python is the perfect language to learn if you've never programmed before, and at the other end, it is also the perfect tool that no expert would do without. Monthly meetings are in addition to our project nights.

What

Meeting will start at 6:00pm.

We will open on an Intro to PYPTUG and on how to get started with Python, PYPTUG activities and members projects, then on to News from the community.

Then on to the main talk.

Main Talk: Splitsville: News from the World of Regular Expressions
by Rex Dwyer
Bio:
Rex Dwyer holds the PhD in Computer Science from Carnegie-Mellon University and the MS in Economics from UNC-Chapel Hill.  He was a faculty member at NC State for 13 years, and published an equal number of write-only journal papers.  He spent most of the past 15 in bioinformatics at Syngenta Biotechnology Inc.  He would like to get paid to be a data scientist.  He enjoys building wooden mechanical puzzles and writing about himself in the third person.

Abstract:
I will survey some old and new features of regular expressions as implemented in the regex module. ( https://pypi.python.org/pypi/regex ).
I will concentrate on look-around and split, solving a couple of problems involving biological sequences.

Lightning talks!

We will have some time for extemporaneous "lightning talks" of 5-10 minute duration. If you'd like to do one, some suggestions of talks were provided here, if you are looking for inspiration. Or talk about a project you are working on.
