Speaker Profile: Safia Abdalla (@captainsafia)

Safia is an energetic software engineer with an interest in data science for social good, intelligent interfaces, and great coffee. She is the founder of dsfa, a professional services startup aimed at providing data science services to small businesses. She is also the organizer of PyData Chicago, where she brings an awesome community of developers and data scientist to build amazing open source software. In her free time, she enjoys working out, contributing to Project Jupyter, and teaching people how to be awesome with code.

Safia will be presenting “Popping Kernels: An Exploration of Kernel Development for Jupyter Notebooks” Saturday at 2PM.  Jupyter Notebooks allow users to interactively execute code in a variety of languages, powered by kernels in the backend. This talk will introduce individuals to the Jupyter Notebook, Jupyter Messaging Protocol, kernel development, the tools needed to begin developing kernels, and how kernel development is a great way to increase proficiency in a new programming language.
