Speaker Profile: Lucas Mehl (@lucasrmehl)

With his background in aerospace engineering, Luke only dabbled in Python up until he became a software engineer working on the Space Launch System at NASA Marshall Space Flight Center in the Jacobs ESSSA Group.  When he’s not simulating and testing the avionics of the most powerful rocket in history, he’s usually found playing chauffeur, pack mule, princess, valiant hero, or dastardly villain for his kids.  When he’s not doing that, he attempts to write fiction and code, grow edible food, apply bugfixes to his house, and read.  But mostly read.

Lucas will be presenting Snakes on a Rocket: Python and NASA’s Space Launch System at 1PM Saturday. Rockets themselves have come a long way since the days of slide rules and analog guidance computers.  The software?  Even more so.  This talk describes the Space Launch System, its capabilities, and a Python application called MAESTRO, in use at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center to validate and verify the SLS avionics.
